Brightline – SR 417 to OIA & Vehicle Maintenance Facility at OIA

GEC provided geotechnical engineering for the inter-city, high speed rail alignment from west of the SR 528/SR 417 Interchange to the intermodal station at the new OIA South Terminal. Project elements include the 5 rail bridges, 5 vehicular bridges, roadway improvements, walls, drainage structures and stormwater ponds.

GEC also provided geotechnical engineering for the Brightline inter-city rail Vehicle Maintenance Facility (VMF) at Orlando International Airport (OIA). A relic sinkhole with deep muck deposits was located in the western portion of the site beneath the track yard. GEC designed and monitored the soil surcharge to pre-settle the compressible organic soils to reduce future track settlement to within tolerable limits. Construction of the drop table within the VMF is in progress. The underground chamber allows easy access to underside of train cars and facilitates their maintenance. Waterproof construction is required for the chamber that extends 25 feet below the water table.
